⚠️
Critical: Never use your pants or jeans size to order a tool belt. Tool belts sit on your hips, over your work clothes, hoodie, and regular belt — and must accommodate the weight of loaded tools pulling downward. Most people need a belt 4" to 7" larger than their pants size.
1

Put on your work clothes

Wear the clothes you normally wear on the job — work pants, regular belt, shirt, and hoodie or jacket if applicable. Your tool belt will be worn over all of these.
✓ Measure in winter clothing if you work outdoors in cold weather
2

Wrap the tape at hip level

Tool belts sit on the hips, not the waist. Wrap a cloth tape measure around your body where you plan to wear the belt — typically just below your natural waist, sitting on your hip bones.
✓ Keep the tape snug but not tight — leave room for a finger underneath
3

Note your hip measurement

Read the measurement in inches. This is your hip circumference measurement. Do not use this number directly — you need to add allowance for tool weight and comfort.
✓ Round up to the nearest inch if between measurements
4

If you have an existing belt

Lay your current tool belt flat on a surface. Measure from the end of the buckle to the hole you normally use. That number is your belt size — compare it directly to our size chart.
✓ This is the most accurate method — use it if you can

AVOID COSTLY MISTAKES

Sizing Do's & Don'ts

The most common ordering mistakes — and how to avoid them.

✓ Do This

  • Measure at your hip level, where you'll actually wear the belt
  • Wear your normal work clothing when measuring
  • Add 4"–7" to your hip measurement for belt length
  • Use an existing belt measurement from buckle to used hole for accuracy
  • Size up if you're between sizes — leather stretches with wear
  • Factor in winter layers if you work outdoors year-round
  • Consider suspenders for belts loaded over 8 lbs
  • Choose trade-specific pocket layouts over generic designs
  • Condition your leather belt every 3 months for maximum lifespan

✕ Never Do This

  • Never order based on your pants / jeans waist size
  • Don't measure in light indoor clothing if you work outdoors
  • Don't order a tight fit expecting the leather to stretch enough — it won't
  • Don't ignore hand orientation — left-hand and right-hand belts are different
  • Don't overload a belt that doesn't fit — it causes permanent distortion
  • Never soak leather in water to break it in — it damages the fibres
  • Don't share tool belt measurements with your clothing size online
  • Don't assume one size fits winter and summer without adjustment holes
COMFORT SYSTEM

Do You Need Suspenders?

Suspenders redistribute belt weight from your hips to your shoulders — protecting your lower back and dramatically improving all-day comfort.

⚖️

Belt weight over 6 lbs

Once your loaded rig exceeds 6 lbs, hip pressure becomes significant over a full shift. Suspenders eliminate this.

🧰

Framers & heavy trades

Framers, concrete workers, and anyone carrying dual hammer setups should always use suspenders. Non-negotiable for long-term joint health.

📐

Sizes XL and above

Larger belts carry more weight. All XL rigs include D-rings for a 4-point suspender attachment as standard.

⏱️

Working 8+ hour shifts

Even a medium-weight belt causes cumulative hip and back strain on long shifts. Suspenders are a worthwhile investment.

🩺

Back or hip pain

If you have prior lower back issues, never work without suspenders. Load redistribution greatly reduces lumbar stress.

🔧

Fitting suspenders

Suspenders should keep the belt sitting flat on the hips with no downward sag. Adjust straps until fully loaded and comfortable.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I'm between two sizes?

Always size up when between sizes. Full-grain leather naturally stretches and molds to your body over the first 2–4 weeks of wear, tightening by approximately one hole. A belt that feels slightly loose on day one will fit perfectly after break-in. A belt that's too tight on day one will never become comfortable.

Why can't I use my pants waist size?

Pants sizes vary between brands and often don't reflect where a tool belt is worn. Always measure around your hips for the most accurate fit.

How long does full-grain leather take to break in?

Most belts become noticeably more comfortable after 2–4 weeks of regular use and continue to mold naturally over time.

Does BoltBelts offer left-handed configurations?

Yes. Left-hand and right-hand layouts are available for many of our tool belt models.

How do I measure if I don't have an existing tool belt?

Measure around your hips where the belt will sit while wearing your normal work clothing. Then follow our sizing guide.

Do BoltBelts come in plus sizes (2XL, 3XL)?

Yes. Selected models are available in extended sizes to ensure a comfortable fit.

What is your return/exchange policy on sizing?

If your belt doesn't fit correctly, contact our support team and we'll help arrange an exchange according to our return policy.

What belt width should I choose?

Belt width depends on your trade and the amount of equipment you carry. Wider belts provide better weight distribution for heavier loads.
